Labour MPs cautioned over travel expenses

3:49 pm on 10 August 2009

Labour leader Phil Goff has warned the party's MPs to be careful with their travel expenses.

Mr Goff is defending Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson, Chris Carter, who spent $57,000 on air travel in the first half of this year.

Mr Goff says Mr Carter is a hard-working MP, but he has told all members of the caucus who are considering travel to think about how necessary their trip is and whether they are getting good value for money - particularly in the current economic circumstances.

The Prime Minister has asked for a review of housing allowances for cabinet ministers and Mr Goff says he would support any widening of that review.
