Solid kiwifruit sales reported

Zespri says 65% of this season's crop has already been shipped to international markets.

The quality of the fruit is described as good and sales have been solid in all markets.

Chief executive Lain Jager acknowledges the company will need to work "harder and smarter" to ensure strong sales as competing summer fruit volumes increase, especially in the European markets.

He says grower returns should be similar to last year's, which ranged from almost $7 per tray for green kiwifruit, to almost $10 per tray for the gold variety.

While it has passed the significant half-way mark in a strong position, Zespri says there are still other challenges ahead.

The marketer and exporter has vigorously defended its record against a claim by Turners & Growers that it's abusing its dominant position in the kiwifruit industry and reducing competition.
