Small explosion at Burwood Hospital

9:09 am on 16 August 2009

Investigations are continuing over the weekend into the cause of a small explosion at Burwood Hospital in Christchurch. It may lead to the postponement of some surgery.

The blast happened when a door of a sterilising unit blew out just after midday on Friday, damaging the machine and the wall and ceiling of the room housing it.

No one was hurt but staff were shaken and took the rest of the day off work.

Canterbury District Health Board says the accident will not mean the postponement of any surgery at Burwood Hospital next week.

The machine's manufacturers, staff from Occupational Safety and Health, and hospital maintenance workers are carrying out the investigation.
