Record increase in elective surgery, says minister

The Government says there has been a record increase since it took office in the amount of elective, or non-urgent, surgery being performed in hospitals.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says 12,000 extra procedures have been done in the past year - three times its goal for the period.

Mr Ryall told Parliament on Thursday that over eight years, the previous Labour-led Government managed to boost elective surgery by just over 10,000 procedures - an average of 1432 a year.

He says preliminary information shows that in the past year alone, more than 12,000 extra patients have had non-urgent surgery.

The minister says the Government has delivered on its three-year goal and across nearly all surgical specialties.

But the Labour Party says the boost may have been achieved by increasing the number of relatively minor procedures at the expense of more complex cases.
