New research supports previous theories that single-sex schooling is beneficial for boys.

Almost 1000 people born in Christchurch in 1977 have been studied as part of the Christchurch Health and Development Study.

Principal researcher Sheree Gibb on Thursday released findings which looked at the merits of single-sex schools in terms of the gap in educational achievement between boys and girls.

It finds that boys performed better, and Ms Gibb says the Education Ministry should look at what particular aspects of single-sex schooling make the difference.

Ms Gibb says this research is the first specific examination of the differences between boys and girls in educational achievement.
