Fletcher Building has improved its safety procedures following a fatal accident in Nelson last year in which a worker was buried in sand, the company says.
The company's subsidiary, Firth, pleaded guilty in the Nelson District Court on Thursday to failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of a worker.
Employee Graham Stuart Dick went inside a bin to clean it last September and was engulfed by a sand collapse and asphyxiated.
Firth was fined $45,000 and ordered to pay $125,000 in reparation to Mr Dick's the family.
Fletcher Building spokesperson Philip King says the company has since changed work procedures and is committed to making further improvements.
