The Taliban in Pakistan has officially confirmed that their leader, Baitullah Mehsud, has been killed.

The BBC reports it is the first time that the group has acknowledged his death.

Two of his senior commanders, Hakimullah Mehsud and Waliur Rehman, said that he died of injuries sustained in a US missile strike at his father-in-law's compound on 5 August.

Hakimullah, who is believed to be in his late 20s, has been named as his successor.

Mehsud was accused of scores of suicide bombings and other attacks.

Earlier, government officials said the two factions had taken up arms against each other.
