Markets in Asia and the Pacific were lower at the close of trade on Monday.

The New Zealand benchmark index was down 11 points, or 0.36%, to 3098 on turnover of $62 million.

Shares in top stocks were lower. Telecom was down 4 cents to $2.75, Fletcher Building slid 16c to $7.86 and Contact Energy fell 15c to $6.25.

The Australian share market also ended the day down. The All Ordinaries Index fell 12 points to 4,484, while the ASX 200 lost 11 points to 4,479, the ABC reports.

Japan's Nikkei stock market index hit an 11-month high in early trading following news the opposition Democratic Party has swept aside the long-ruling conservative party in a landslide election victory, the BBC reports.

However, the benchmark index was 0.4% lower at 10,493 at the close of trade due to a rise in the yen and fall in Chinese stocks.
