Australia considers military exercises with China

The Australian government says it is willing to take part in more military exercises with China.

The training is aimed at preparing a joint response to humanitarian crises in the Pacific, the ABC reports.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says the training is a good idea and will help both countries to prepare for dealing with natural disasters in the region.

Chinese ambassador to Australia Zhang Junsai says the two nations and New Zealand did joint training two years ago for that sort of humanitarian work.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says Australia has defence cooperation and contact with a range of countries, and there is no reason why that cannot be contemplated with China.

Ambassador Zhang says China's military build-up is purely for defensive purposes.
