Shuttle returns from trip to space station

3:39 pm on 12 September 2009

The space shuttle Discovery has landed at the Edwards air force base in California.

Plans to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida were prevented due to bad weather.

The Discovery missed two landing slots on Thursday and touched down at 1753 PDT on Friday, (0053GMT Saturday).

It is returning from a mission to the International Space Station with seven astronauts on board.

The BBC reports NASA tries to avoid landings in California, because the shuttle has be transported by road back to Florida, which takes more than a week and costs $US1.7 million.

Discovery took a furnace and freezer to the station for use in science experiments. It also delivered a new sleeping compartment, an air purification system and a treadmill for the astronauts.

Three spacewalks were conducted during the mission.

NASA plans six further shuttle flights to the ISS by the end of next year or early in 2011.

Atlantis will be the next to launch in November.
