Convicted murderer Clayton Weatherston has so far been granted $98,119 in legal aid for his defence.
The former Otago University tutor was sentenced on Tuesday to at least 18 years jail for killing his former girlfriend, 22-year-old Sophie Elliott. He stabbed her 216 times at her family's Dunedin home early last year.
The Legal Services Agency says the final amount paid to Weatherston's defence counsel will not be known until all invoices have been received and assessed.
Legal aid grants may include aid for costs other than a lawyer's time, including expert witnesses, forensic tests, investigators and office costs.
