Suicide bombers kill AU deputy commander

3:36 pm on 18 September 2009

The deputy commander of the African Union (AU)peacekeeping forces in Somalia and eight of his men have been killed in a suicide attack by Islamist fighters.

The al Shabab group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which was carried out by suicide bombers at the AU base in the capital, Mogadishu.

Major-General Juvenal Niyonguruza was killed when two white vehicles showing United Nations logos, but packed with explosives, drove into the base.

Al-Shabab said the bombs were revenge for a United States raid on Monday.

The BBC reports there are about 5000 AU troops, mostly from Uganda and Burundi, in Mogadishu, protecting the government.
