Another section of cycleway opens

7:27 am on 20 September 2009

The second to last section of one of New Zealand's most popular cycleways, the Little River Rail Trail in Canterbury, opens on Sunday, giving cyclists a further 4km.

With the Government now offering funding for tracks across the country as part of its New Zealand Cycleways project, the focus for the Little River Trust Board is on securing money to ensure the trail grows in future.

But before the Little River Rail Trail can be extended, a spat about where it will actually end, has to be resolved.

Options include continuing the trail along the river, ending up in the township by the information centre and building a crossing for people to get across the road to the cafes.

Or, the trail could travel under the State Highway near the Little River Hotel, and then travel along to the township's railway station.

Trust board chair Chris Freear would like to see a large circuit that would start and finish in the centre of Christchurch.

More about the New Zealand Cycleway Project can be heard on Insight, just after 8am on Sunday on Radio New Zealand National.
