An Ashburton marae is to get $10,000 per year for three years from the Ministry of Health to develop a garden on half an acre of spare land.
The Hakatere marae is growing the garden as a way to strengthen its links to the wider community.
Waatea News reports produce will go to the marae and a local foodbank.
Marae chair Trevor Simpson says rangatahi will be trained in horticulture and a new kitchen at the marae will be used to run cooking courses.
