Driving charge to be dismissed for U-turn officer

5:12 pm on 25 September 2009

A careless driving charge against a Nelson constable is set to be dismissed as police have agreed to grant him diversion.

The officer, whose name is suppressed, made a U-turn in his highway patrol car to chase a speeding car and collided with a following vehicle on State Highway 6.

No one was injured in the incident on 1 June this year.

Nelson Bays police area commander Inspector Brian McGurk has confirmed the constable has been granted diversion, which he says is not uncommon for first offenders.

The charge is expected to be withdrawn when the officer completes his diversion conditions and appears in court in October.

The conditions of his diversion have not been made public.
