Zero tolerance = 80 arrests at Blossom Festival

9:42 pm on 28 September 2009

Zero tolerance of drunken behaviour saw 80 people arrested for disorderly or offensive behaviour at this year's annual Blossom Festival in Alexandra.

The event, in its 53rd year, has traditionally attracted large numbers of young people, mainly from Southland.

More than 10,000 people lined Alexandra's main street to watch the blossom parade on Saturday. Senior Sergeant Jill Woods says a family atmosphere prevailed despite the arrests.

Those arrested will appear at a special sitting of the Alexandra District Court on 20 October.
