Exit polls in Portugal suggest that the governing Socialist Party has won another term in office, while losing its outright majority in Parliament in a general election this weekend.

The polls suggest the Socialist Party has won about40% of the vote.

The BBC reports the opposition Social Democrats have admitted defeat.

During the campaign, prime minister Jose Socrates promised to invest heavily in public work projects to tackle Portugal's rising unemployment.
