A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in the lower South Island of New Zealand on Thursday.
The quake occurred at 6.44pm and was centred 120km west of Tuatapere at a depth of 25km.
GNS Science seismologist Bill Fry says the quake was an aftershock of the Fiordland 7.8 magnitude quake which occurred in mid-July.
Dr Fry says it is likely aftershocks of that major quake will continue for the next few months.
