A New Zealand company that develops Kiwifruit sorting machinery is expanding into the Japanese market.
Onehunga-based ComPac Sorting Equipment has landed a deal to install sorting equipment and gentle box fillers at a kiwifruit packhouse in Fukuoka province.
The Japanese-owned packhouse handles gold kiwifruit, which are licensed to Zespri in New Zealand.
ComPac general manager Bob Shaw says the company has been selling sorting equipment to other countries for many years, but had found it hard breaking into the Japanese market, which is loyal to goods produced in the country.
Mr Shaw is not revealing the value of the contract, but says Japan is a very advanced market and having equipment operating there could open more doors for the company.
