American space agency NASA is set to crash two unmanned spacecraft into the Moon in a bid to detect the presence of water-ice.
The Moon's soil is known to be drier than any desert on Earth, but several orbiting spacecraft have hinted that water in the form of ice may lurk in the darkest shadows, the BBC reports.
NASA will test the theory by slamming two tonnes of rocket into the Cabeus crater at the lunar south pole.
A probe following swiftly behind will analyse the debris cloud for water vapour and radio its findings home.
If there is water ice at the poles it would be very useful to astronauts to drink and to make rocket fuel.
