Four overdue trampers make it safely out

Four trampers reported missing in the Rimutaka Forest Park north of Wellington have made it to safety.

They were reported overdue on Sunday night, after failing to return from an overnight trip to the Orongorongo river - which was running high.

The waters receded enough for the group to walk out, free of injuries, at about 3.30pm on Monday.

Search and Rescue coordinator Constable Brett Main says the group, all in their 20s, seemed to have coped quite well with the equipment they were carrying.

He's advising all trampers to check weather conditions before setting out, in light of the recent bad weather.
