The events industry generated $479 million towards the economy of Auckland City last year.

An evaluation commissioned by the city council shows 1674 events were hosted last year which were attended by 7.82 million people. Some 7227 fulltime jobs were generated.

Arts, community and recreation committee chair Greg Moyle says the revenue generated demonstrates the importance of the events industry to Auckland.

Mr Moyle says the council needs to continue to bid for higher profile events, such as the 2012 Commonwealth Games.

As well as creating jobs and encouraging improvements in infrastructure and facilities, Mr Moyle says they also attract visitors and additional spending.
