The power is out north of Wellington near the Kapiti Coast town of Waikanae on Sunday morning.
Lines company Electra says strong winds caused a fault on one of its main lines on Akatarawa Road.
Meanwhile, power has been restored to homes in northern Manawatu.
Shannon, Tokomaru, Opiki and some areas of Foxton had been without electricity for part of the morning.
