Movember funds prostate cancer research

The Cancer Society says a charitable donation from the Movember Foundation will fund further research for prostate cancer treatments.

Every year, 3000 men in New Zealand are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 600 die. It is the second largest cause of male cancer deaths after smoking-associated cancers.

Money raised from last year's event, which encourages men to grow a moustache during the month of November, is providing support for two studies aimed at improving treatments and survival rates.

Cancer Society chief executive Dalton Kelly says Movember contributes significantly to vital reseach, which is crucial to improving survival rates and treatments of prostate cancer.

One study looks at how to prevent osteoporosis, which can be a side-effect of hormone therapy used to treat prostate cancer.

The second study focuses on physical activity programmes to improve the well-being of patients undergoing therapy.

Movember Foundation organiser Jim Slattery says he is delighted such worthy projects are being supported and raising the money has a profound impact on men's health.
