The mayor of Napier says serious damage to the council's toilets by mindless, senseless vandalism is costing the city dearly.
Barbara Arnott says that in the past three months vandals have left a trail of destruction at many of the city's 43 toilet facilities, with more than 20 pans having to be replaced.
In addition, she says, cisterns, glass bricks, doors and hand-driers have been wrecked in toilets, which are located in key areas close to tourist attractions and shops.
Mrs Arnott says the upkeep of the facilities costs ratepayers about $700,000 a year, and she'll be recommending that the council install security cameras to help reduce vandalism.
