Public help sought over Queenstown homicide

6:32 am on 22 November 2009

Police investigating a homicide in Queenstown say they have a great deal of intensive work to do to solve the case.

Mark Smith, 47, of Queenstown died after an altercation in downtown Camp Street on Thursday night.

Senior Sergeant John Fookes says about two dozen people have come forward so far but more information is needed to piece together the sequence of events.

Mr Fookes says anyone in the vicinity of Camp Street at the time should speak with police, whether they believe their information is of value or not.

A man, 34, has appeared in the Queenstown District Court on an assault charge and granted interim name suppression. Police say it is likely more serious charges will follow.

Police are refusing to release the findings of a post-mortem, saying it could compromise the inquiry.

Mr Fookes says the investigation has a long way to go, but is heading in the right direction.

More than 30 officers are working on the homicide.
