Stadium refuseniks face debt collector

8:39 pm on 25 November 2009

The Otago Regional Council will use a debt collector to recover money from ratepayers who have refused to pay the portion of their rates attributed to Dunedin's new stadium.

The contentious project will cost $200 million.

The council's associate director of communications, Peter Taylor, says that between 20 and 30 people are refusing to pay, despite being warned that they must. The final due date was 31 October.

Once the council is satisfied that it has contacted all ratepayers who have withheld their stadium payments, Mr Taylor says, it will engage a debt collection agency.
