Inquiry follows girl's death at rugby tournament

An investigation involving police and the Department of Labour has begun to find out how a six-year-old girl was crushed by sports equipment at an Auckland high school.

Ambulance staff were called to Tamaki College in the suburb of Glen Innes soon after the accident on Saturday, but could not revive the girl.

The college was hosting a touch rugby tournament. Police say the girl was at the event with family members when the accident occurred about 2.30pm. She died at the scene.

The girl's family are distraught have asked for respect and privacy as they mourn their loss.

The Department of Labour says inquiries are underway as investigators try to determine how the accident occurred.
