Police in South Auckland are sending cards to families they have dealt with in the past, encouraging them to have a violence-free Christmas.
Detective Inspector John Tims says the cards have advice and a list of numbers to call if a situation gets out of hand.
He says the police have been sending the cards to at-risk families since 2007.
Police say this is the busiest time of year for family violence. Last year, they had more than 2000 calls in December and January.
