Telecom to compensate XT mobile users

7:25 pm on 14 December 2009

Telecom says it is investigating compensation for customers on its XT mobile network affected by a major breakdown on Monday.

Network coverage was down from south of Taupo since about 5am on Monday morning, affecting up to 90,000 customers.

Telecom's chief executive of retail, Alan Gourdie, says the problem was due to a technical fault at its Christchurch control centre.

He told Checkpoint the new network is still suffering from a few teething problems.

"With any new network like the XT network we do from time to time get some faults in the system.

"A network as sophisticated as the XT network has to be, in a situation like this, rebuilt level by level."

Mr Gourdie says the initial fault diagnosis took some time.

He says Telecom is continuing to monitor the network, and is investigating an appropriate form of compensation for customers.

A similar fault nearly three weeks ago left some XT customers unable to make phone calls for more than five hours.
