Lamb-shearing world record still defies Mutch

The Taranaki-based Scottish shearer Gavin Mutch has failed in his second bid to break the world eight-hour lamb-shearing record.

On Friday, he set out to beat the record of 736 lambs set by Christchurch-based Irish shearer Ivan Scott a year ago.

But he abandoned the attempt at the halfway stage after shearing 353 sheep in cold conditions and falling of the pace needed to break the record.

Gavin Mutch is expected to concentrate on the New Zealand competition circuit for the rest of the season, before heading to Scotland with the aim of representing that country at the world championships in Wales.

He was a finalist at last year's championships in Norway.
