Second arrest in police shooting

11:13 pm on 24 December 2009

The police have arrested a second man in relation to the shooting of a south Auckland police officer earlier this week.

Constable Jeremy Snow, 28, was shot three times at Buckingham Crescent in Papatoetoe on Tuesday morning.

Police spokesperson Ana-Mari Gates-Bowey says Darren Court has been arrested and charged in relation to two outstanding warrants concerning car theft and violence.

She says police are still talking to Mr Court and it's too early to reveal his connection to the shooting.

Another man, who has name suppression, was arrested on Wednesday and has since been charged with attempted murder.

Mr Snow remains in a stable condition at Middlemore Hospital.

Collins calls for tougher penalties

Police Minister Judith Collins is suggesting stronger penalties for attacks on the police.

She says when people shoot at police officers, they are attacking the very rule of law.

But leading defence lawyer Stuart Grieve QC says introducing tougher sentences would be a knee-jerk reaction to the latest shooting.

Mr Grieve says harming a police officer would already be an aggravating factor which is taken into account during sentencing.

He says there is no need to translate strong feelings about this shooting into votes at the next election.

The Police Association says it was the seventh shooting of a police officer in 18 months.
