Police in Wellington report traffic is moving slowly as people begin heading home from the Christmas holiday.
Traffic is heavy and slow-moving on State Highway 1 on the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington.
Police say traffic is backed up in both directions between Porirua and Levin, and volumes are expected to increase over the afternoon.
Drivers are urged to remain patient.
