Iran in crisis - opposition leader

8:49 am on 2 January 2010

Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi says Iran is in a serious crisis and the refusal of the authorities to recognise this, won't make it go away.

The BBC reports he has blamed the authorities for provoking violence at demonstrations and said that arresting or killing opposition leaders, including himself, would not calm the situation.

In a statement posted on his website, Mr Mousavi said the government, parliament and judiciary must accept "direct responsibility" for the situation, which follows a disputed presidential election in June.

The BBC reports it was his first comment since the death of his nephew and other anti-government protesters late last month.
