A Somali man has been charged with trying to kill a Danish cartoonist whose drawing of the Prophet Mohammed sparked riots around the world.

Armed with an axe and a knife, he broke into the house of artist Kurt Westergaard in the town of Aarhus late on Friday.

Police shot him in the knee and the shoulder after officers who tried to arrest him were threatened.

The head of the Danish Police Intelligence Agency says the man, 28, had been under police surveillance due to links with what he described as terrorist groups.

The suspect was carried into court on a stretcher on Saturday. He denied the charge and was remanded in custody. He also denied trying to murder a police officer.

Westergaard, 74, who was in the house with his granddaughter, aged five, raised the alarm from a specially designed panic room.
