Hoarding seen as fire risk

The Fire Service says people who hoard large amounts of household items in their homes, are at greater risk from fire.

A recent Australian study over 10 years found one in four fire fatalities in Melbourne, was associated with hoarding.

Fire safety officials in New Zealand say people who collect vast quantities of items, such as newspapers, junk mail and even food, often fill their houses to the point where they cannot escape if a fire breaks out.

The Phobic Trust agrees it's a major problem. However, it says simply throwing things out does not solve the underlying problem.

The Fire Service says houses filled to the ceiling, with blocked doors and windows, are also dangerous for firefighters, who are unable to see because of smoke.
