Police in Gisborne have warned a group of children who they believe used a lighter to start a grass fire on Saturday night.
The seven hectare fire on Kaiti Hill threatened to engulf up to 10 houses at one point, before fire crews and two helicopters bought the blaze under control.
Police say they have "spoken sternly" to the children who were aged between six and 11 years, and their families.
