Fiji lawyer claims family persecuted for no reason

A human rights lawyer in Fiji facing corruption charges brought by the interim government says her family is being persecuted for no reason.

Imrana Jalal, a member of the International Commission of Jurists, is facing seven charges in relation to a Suva City Council matter, Radio New Zealand International reports.

Ms Jalal has described the charges as "trumped up" and says it is part of the military's campaign to try to silence critics.

"I'm being prosecuted for charges that are unrelated in any way whatsoever and my family is being persecuted because of me. That is callous, that is underhand.

Ms Jalal says it is "contemptible" that her five-year-old boy was prevented from travelling to see his grandparents in Brisbane in December.

Meanwhile, Fiji's interim government has confirmed it is investigating 15 Suva City Council workers sent home last Friday.

The website Fiji Village is reporting the workers are being investigated for allegedly blogging against the interim regime.
