Chemical leak at Fonterra plant

9:03 am on 13 January 2010

A firefighter injured while attending a chemical leak at a Fonterra plant in Waikato has been discharged from hospital.

The immediate area of the Lichfield plant near Tokoroa had to be evacuated on Tuesday after 10,000 litres of caustic soda mixed with 1400 litres of ammonia.

The Fire Service says the spill has been neutralised and a gas cloud which the leak created has dissipated.

The firefighter was taken to Tokoroa hospital with ammonia burns to his arms and has been treated and sent home.
