Papua New Guinea's most notorious criminal is on the run again after escaping from a maximum security jail near the capital Port Moresby.

It is the second time William Kapris has escaped from custody, the ABC website reports.

The breakout began when a warder from the Bomana jail was kidnapped after transporting a prisoner to hospital.

He was forced to phone the jail's maximum security unit and told the guards to expect a visit from a female human rights lawyer.

Soon after, a woman posing as a lawyer was allowed into the area, met with a prisoner and gave him a pistol which he used to subdue the two guards on duty.

All 12 inmates then fled in the woman's car.

Kapris was due to stand trial over two bank robberies and is suspected of being involved in several other violent crimes.

Before being captured in 2008 he had been on the run for eight years after escaping police detention while convalescing in hospital.
