A yacht which hit rocks in Queen Charlotte Sound on Thursday morning was being towed to Picton by a police launch.

A police spokesman says the 10-metre yacht struck rocks off Dieffenbach Point at the entrance to Tory Channel about 8.30am on Thursday.

The skipper suffered minor facial injuries in the impact. Two other people on board were unhurt.

The police say the yacht took on water but was in no immediate danger of sinking.

The police launch Lady Elizabeth was on a routine patrol in the area and was expected to tow the yacht into Waikawa marina about 11am.
