Invercargill police say no foul play was involved in the death of a person whose remains were discovered in a burnt-out car at Oreti Beach on Friday.
Fire crews realised after they had extinguished the fire that the remains of a person were in the vehicle.
Inspector Olaf Jensen says the Fire Service is working to establish what caused the fire.
The death has been referred to the coroner, and a post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
