Train commuters reassured over delays

Commuters will not face delays when using buses replacing trains that had been scheduled to start on Monday, says Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

The city's main commuter rail lines remain closed because of problems that prevented workers from completing new signalling equipment at the Newmarket junction by Monday morning.

The delay comes after three weeks of extensive work on the lines, and has put a dampener on the first day of operation of the multi-million-dollar Newmarket station.

The city's southern and eastern lines remain closed, and only a few trains are running on the western line.

Transport authority spokesperson Sharon Hunter says the delay is disappointing, but replacement bus services are working well.

Ms Hunter says there is always a risk of delay when putting a big project with complex technology in place.

KiwiRail says it expects the trains to be running on Tuesday morning.
