Box office sensation Avatar has been named the best film drama and The Hangover has won the best comedy or musical prize at the annual Golden Globe Awards.

The Golden Globes are given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are the first big opportunity each year for Hollywood to hand out awards to itself.

In addition to winning the best dramatic picture award, Avatar's director, James Cameron, won the prize for best director.

In the television category, Mad Men, about the lives of Madison Avenue advertising executives, claimed its third straight Golden Globe for best drama. It screens in New Zealand on Prime.

The best comedy or musical was won by Glee, which airs on TV3.

British comedian Ricky Gervais presented the event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Kate Winslet, Sir Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster and Cher were among the presenters.
