Main danger from cyclone Olga now over

8:32 pm on 24 January 2010

Cyclone Olga has crossed the far north Queensland coast and the weather bureau says the main danger has passed.

The ABC reports that the cyclone crossed near Cape Tribulation and is breaking up as it moves across land.

The weather bureau's regional director Jim Davidson says the system has been downgraded to a category one and the danger from strong winds has diminished.

Cairns forecaster, Leo Farrell, says the far north can expect some heavy rain as the system continues to move across land.

The Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says Emergency Management Queensland has activated disaster assistance groups in the areas likely to be affected.
