Lifeguards at Piha say bad weather has kept people out of the surf so far this summer.
The of the Piha Surf Lifesaving Club says summer has been quiet because the bad weather has meant fewer people swimming.
Club captain Tony Featherstone says only one death has occured at Piha this summer - a fisherman who drowned on 3 January.
A hundred and fifty lifesavers patrol the beach during the surf lifesaving season, which runs from Labour weekend to about Easter.
Mr Featherstone says men aged 18 to 25 years continue to cause the most problems.
He says people are becoming more educated about the ocean and are asking questions and staying between the flags. He says fishermen should also wear lifejackets.
