SH6 to close for blasting

3:49 pm on 1 February 2010

State Highway 6 between Queenstown to Cromwell will be intermittently closed from next Monday to allow blasting of overhanging rock bluffs.

The Transport Agency says the highway will be closed for 20 minute periods so engineers can blast two unstable rock faces on the Nevis Bluff.

Area manager John Jarvis says one of the outcrops is a remnant of a major rock fall which closed the road for two weeks in September 2000.

He says the works should take about six weeks to complete.
