Some cardiologists and other health professionals cycled into Wellington on Sunday, marking the halfway point in a nationwide fund raiser.

The National Heart Foundation's "Great Heart Ride" surpassed its $1 million target within days of beginning in Cape Reinga last Monday.

Minister of Health Tony Ryall joined in and cycled with the group as they rode into Parliament on Sunday afternoon.

He says the effort to raise awareness of heart disease, which is New Zealand's number one killer, is tremendous.

The ride continues to Bluff, where the group will arrive next Sunday.

The money raised will help the University of Auckland set up a research centre and employ a professor of cardiovascular heart health, as well as raise the profile of of heart health.
