Entrenchment bill in ballot a mistake, Maori MP admits

10:22 pm on 10 February 2010

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira says it was a mistake to put forward a member's bill that goes against the party's arrangement with the Government.

The bill, which aims to entrench Maori seats, contradicts the party's deal with the Government not to pursue legislation on the issue in exchange for a constitutional review this year.

Mr Harawira, the MP for Te Tai Tokerau, says the bill was drafted two or three years ago and neither of the party's co-leaders, Tariana Turia or Pita Sharples, was present at a meeting on Wednesday when it was decided to put it in the ballot.

Mr Harawira says he has been made aware that the bill contradicts the confidence and supply agreement, and is hoping the co-leaders will apologise on his behalf.

The MP says the bill will not be resubmitted.
