Building to be moved to make way for road

One of Auckland's oldest buildings will be retained, despite previous threats to demolish or relocate it to make way for a multi-million-dollar road and tunnel.

The Bird Cage tavern, which was built in 1886, will be shifted 40 metres temporarily, while a tunnel and wider motorway between the harbour bridge and the central city are built.

The tavern will then be moved back to within 10m of its current position.

The Transport Agency says the cost of moving it out of the way and back into position will cost $2.5 million, which will come from within an existing budget.

The roading project, which is aimed at easing congestion on one of Auckland's busiest inner-city routes, is expected to be completed by 2012.
